My Favorite Things, COVID Season 3 Edition

Ah, my favorite things. Decidedly so because, well they’re my favorite. As we’re onto Season 3 of a COVID winter, socked into Seattle’s deep gray, there’s a mixture in the air. No, not just virus particles, but a resignation, a hope, some snow and a springy chirp of birds.

So, as expected (mostly by me, only by me), here are my favorite things that (attempt to) keep me sane throughout this new slog, but also bring joy in an exploratory, fun period of less travel, more homebodiedness. Less social know-how and more burnout. A little less instagram and more, much more, resilience. As promised, here is the latest list:

A Puzzle

1000 pieces of sheer joy during a nightly Netflix dance. If you’re lucky, you might have a puzzle board to stash your lil work in progress under the couch. If you’re unlucky, your sister stole your puzzle board and now you dedicate a vast majority of your coffee tabletop to the endeavor. Worth it. Beware back pain and addiction.

A Library Card

Having fun, really isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card. Truly. Consider this the lost art, the forgotten tax dollar. Previously, if I saw a desirable title, I skipped on over to Amazon and clicked that little beguiling button, Add to Cart. And then I’d look at my credit card bill. While the pursuit of knowledge is wondrous, I was spending way too much money on books, books I didn’t even know if I’d like or not(!). And lo, inspiration! Guess what, there is a resource with fucking FREE books, and I forgot about it completely. Now, I walk my little (big) booty over to the local library to pick up the holds I’ve reserved via le internet. If I love the book, then I buy it so I can pass along as a recommendation, reread, or just spy it on my shelf and remember the good times the author and I had together.

A New Dog

No wait, don’t do this. As I write, my beautiful, $2000, one blue- one brown-eyed Aussie is stalking around whining her fucking face off, shredding everything in her path. Reflecting, I realize that I haven’t sat down for more than 30 minutes at a time since I brought her home: always darting out of my chair to make sure she’s not eating yet another roll of toilet paper or barking endlessly at nonexistent threats. Pros: all walks, all the time! Cons: Loss of sanity.

A Houseplant

..or four. Indoor Sun Shoppe is my go-to local favorite. My favorite plants are my Birds of Paradise, Ruby Rubber Plant and the lovely vining Pothos (exceptional as a shower plant or hung from the ceiling).

Apartment Art

These are my current favorites, impinged upon me by way of Society6, and Naomi Amber Dawn, spied at a local Christmas market. They really spark joy any time I gaze upon them.

Random Shit for Your Home

This Target Lamp & this ceramic knot thing from World Market. Idk, I just love them. God bless the Opalhouse Target house brand and the current state of chic interior design.

And that’s it, yet again. Another round of favorites, take ‘em or leave ‘em. Just whatever you do, don’t get a second dog.
